In his recent New York Times Editorial, former conservative advocate David Brooks writes:
Similarly, many progressives argued that cancel culture wasn’t a thing or was being severely exaggerated. Americans who are afraid to think out loud think the left has become too censorious, and the Democratic Party once again is held guilty by association.
Exactly.
I am guessing that the Democrat party is losing its luster for poor David Brooks. All I can say is: join the club.
Mr. Brooks notes his disgust with an electoral strategy the Democrats have been pursuing for at least a few election cycles. Mr. Brooks writes:
The Democratic Party is behaving recklessly and unpatriotically. So far, Democrats have spent tens of millions to help Trumpist candidates in Republican primaries.
Why, you might ask?
They are doing it because they think far-right Trumpist candidates will be easier to beat in the general elections than more moderate candidates.1
Does this sound familar? It should, because it’s the strategy 2016 Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton pursued to help assure her victory in the election. That is, promote a candidate so ridiculuos and so loathesome that Republicans will either hold their nose and vote for Clinton or else at least stay home in disgust. And we all remember how that plan turned out: Donald J. Trump, 45th President of the United States. Bang-up job, Democrats.
I, like many, expect that the Republicans are going to win big in this year’s election. I do not find this a desirable outcome, but it is the one that’s coming. Why? Because the Democrats have nothing on offer except more cancel culture, more mandatory Kendi/D’Angelo-esque critical race theory in the classroom and the workplace, and more calls to “tighten our belts” as a response to inflation impoverishing us. And of course, more bleating about the Supreme Court overturning Roe, but failing to do anything to protect the right to have an abortion. Good gods, the Democrats can’t even bring themselves to say ‘abortion’.
I guess at the national level, the Democrats have nothing to run on but the “Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill” that got passed last year and being able to point at Republicans and say “we suck less.” Good luck with that.
The worst part is, with the Democrats again turning to the strategy of promoting the most reactionary Republicans in a bid to boost their vanishing electoral prospects, they are going to saddle the rest of us with a crazier version of Republicans than would otherwise take over.
To Mr. Brook’s further credit, he condemns this behavior. He wrote, “What the Democrats are doing is sleazy in the best of circumstances. If you love your country more than your party, you should want the best candidates to advance in either party.” Amen.
On The Democrat Party
"I, like many, expect that the Republicans are going to win big in this year’s election. I do not find this a desirable outcome, but it is the one that’s coming. Why? Because the Democrats have nothing on offer except more cancel culture..."
So, you were very wrong. Did your being wrong change your viewpoint in any way? Did you modify what you previously believed to be true, since your previous beliefs led you to make a wrong prediction?
I would love a follow up on this article analyzing how you got this wrong and what views of yours changes because of it.
